MESA Examinations

Exam 1
The first examination took place July 2000 until August 2002 (26 months) and included review of eligibility, signing of the informed consent, collection of questionnaire information from participants, and the physical tests described in the exam components.

Exam 2
The second examination took place September 2002 until February 2004 (17 months) and included signing of the informed consent and HIPAA agreement, repeats or updates of questionnaire and history information including a Family History, and the physical tests described in the exam components. Sub-populations of the cohort that underwent CT, MRI, and ultrasound scanning are also defined in the exam components.

Exam 3
The third examination took place March 2004 until September 2005 (18 months) and included signing of the informed consent and HIPAA agreement, repeats and updates of questionnaire and history information, and the physical tests described in the exam components. Sub-populations of the cohort that underwent CT and ultrasound scanning in this exam are also defined in the exam components.

Exam 4
The fourth examination took place September 2005 through May 2007 (21 months) and included repeats and updates of questionnaire and history information, blood pressure in the arm, anthropometry, repeat measurement of coronary calcification in one-fourth of the cohort, and repeat cardiac MRI in one-fourth of the cohort. During the surveillance period, participants will be contacted at 6-9 month intervals, including a combination of telephone and mail contacts.

Exam 5
The fifth examination took place April 2010 through February 2012 (23 months) and included repeats and updates of questionnaire and history information, blood pressure in arms and legs, anthropometry, vision assessment, retinal photography, and ECG. Cognitive function testing is new for this exam. Cardiac MRI is repeated on participants who had the test in Exam 1, and all eligible participants were asked to have the scan with gadolinium. All participants enrolled in the MESA Air ancillary study are invited to repeat CT and ultrasound scans. After the exam, participants continue to be contacted by phone a 6-9 month intervals for Events surveillance.
